WELCOME TO GAY CENTRAL TEXAS

A guide to living for gay men, lesbians, bisexuals and
transgendered persons from conservative Waco to liberal Austin

Central Texas is a growing destination for members of the GLBT community drawn by the relatively good climate, diverse geographic areas and friendly people living in both large cities and smaller communities.

The majority of the Central Texas GLBT community may not be completely out of the closet due to the conservative religious beliefs at Waco’s Baylor University or the still intact “don’t ask, don’t tell” attitude at the world’s largest military base at Fort Hood, but the area is changing fast thanks to the longtime success of the GLBT community at the state’s capital in nearby Austin. As the gay and lesbian community has grown around the capital, more and more community members have begun to spread out, looking for homes and events that suit the lifestyle they enjoy.

Whether it’s basking naked on the shores of popular Hippie Hollow or making your home in the downtown lofts of Austin or the rural ranches around Salado, Central Texas is becoming one of the country’s biggest hot spots for gays and lesbians. There’s something for everyone. For conservative gays and lesbians looking for a nice place to retire there are the small metropolitan areas surrounding Waco and Temple. For those who want a rural flair, there are farms and ranches spread throughout the Central Texas area that are owned by members of the community. For sportsmen (and women) there are numerous lakes used for boating, fishing and cruising. And for gays and lesbians who want to stay close to their military roots there are the hamlets surrounding Fort Hood, including Killeen, one of the fastest growing areas in Texas.

Central Texas is mainly filled with folks who believe in the old Texas attitude of “live and let live.” In most places they really don’t care what you do in your private life. That’s not to say there aren’t still some big time bigots out there – but that’s pretty much true for anywhere you go. live.

This guide is to help gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgendered folks throughout the Central Texas area with listings of events, gay-friendly establishments and other activities to help make their daily life better. For other members of the community who are visiting Central Texas or who are looking for a great place to live, this site will provide information to help you find fun and exciting things to do in Central Texas or find the kind of lifestyle that fits your personal preference – all in the great Lone Star State.
